Sound Reinforcement

18" Subs

Our bass player knows a guy that wants to part with a couple old Yamaha single 18" sub cabinets - $300 for the pair (might accept $250). The bass player brought 'em over and we hooked them up with a couple 12" 2-way cabs in the garage, and they sounded pretty good. Might be perfect for small to med club gigs. They're in pretty good shape overall, but the grill cloth frames won't stay on... that's about the only real negative.

So I have two questions:...

Phoenix 406 board

I'm working on a Phoenix 406 Pro series that cuts out when the signal gets high. Does anybody have any info about these boards? Are they prone to this type of problem? And what would cause it?

tangent 1200AX

Anybody know anything about Tangent gear? A buddy of mine just came into a 1200AX mixing console and wants to re-cap it but we're havin' trouble finding out anything about it, like a schematic. I ain't never heard of 'em before.

Pevey XR-600....dead channel

My buds PV XR-600 has a dead channel. I removed the control face with the PCBs and thought I would deffinitly find a crack at the terminals for the low Z input.....but no I didn't. The connector buzzes good from the input side to the board terminals. I also buzzed the level pots. Seems OK there. I also made sure that the high Z input wasn't shorted.as well. I want to swap out the low Z connector with another one for trouble shooting. I reflowed the solder on the terms and douched...

Best "bang for the buck" monitor wedges?

Anybody have experience with a specific type/brand monitor wedge that just seems to be a notch above the rest? How about Yamaha Club series? Peavey 115M? Just wondering if someone might suggest a good workhorse cab.( We need at least 200watt power handling and no piezos)

My new vocalist shows up with a Audio-Technica AT2010 condenser. I am immediately blown away. We now plan to get three more for the rest of the band. Anybody have any warnings or advice concerning possible problems using condensers?

Like the world and his wife, I've been using SM58s since god was a boy. However, I was in need of a new set of vocal mics for the PA System and we are currently suffering a flood of Chinese SM58 fakes down here, you probably are in the US, too. Anyhow, theys fakes are so hard to spot physically and they are popping up everywhere, I was somewhat averse to going through the drama of getting half a dozen fakes and then having to get them exchanged etc.

Stage monitors

With the addition of a second guitarist, our band has finally got a nice front system, but now the monitors need some attention.

We've been using a couple of TOA 12" PA cabs powered by a 600W mixer, and they don't sound terrible, but the problem is that we have 3 vocalists - one of which happens to be the drummer - and the TOA's just aren't providing enough coverage.

The other guitarist swears by hotspots, but I've heard others say they suck. I used some in a wedding band...

A bargain on eBay

Just scored a complete Shure LX4 system with the beta 58 mic, for Aus$70, about US$50. Sold cheap because, quote 'the mic isn't working". When I got it the wire from the voice coil was broken right at the solder tab. A tiny dab of solder, and voila!

It's only the VHF unit, but at that price too good to pass up.

internal microphone foam insert

I'd like to replace the interior foam insert on my old EV Pl 80.
I know it's discontinued, but is there an after market supplier around.

I don't want the external type because they limit closing in
on the mic when your running out of gas or need a loud bass note.

Hiya SG.
I'm a notorious "old fart" when it comes to my PA, and I'm finally thinking about replacing my mains.
What I have:
(no laughing, they sound great)
4 X Peavey SP2. 15" BW and cheep 22A driver horn.
Driven by a Mackie 1400i Power amp.

What I have heard and like:
Mackie SA1530z powered speakers, with:
The Mackie 18" SA series sub.

I'd be dropping the SP2's, and the 1400i, replaced with the pair of 1530's, for smaller venues, add...

Will I ever learn? It appears not.

I have been asked to mix for a band that has been doing some recording in my studio. I really like their stuff so I have agreed. I have the basics of the sound system and can hire powered speakers and subs as needed. But, I don't have much in the way of lights, a few Par 56s and a couple of 64s and some traffic lights with a chaser. I noticed SG mentioned a DMX controller in another thread and I have been looking at some of this DMX stuff. Whats...

I have a chance to pick up a Carvin PM1000 wireless transmitter, and 4 PM1001 receiver beltpack/ear buds. Cheap.

I personally HATE dealing with stage monitors. (I play, sing, and run sound from the stage)
Have you seen/used/talked to anyone who's used them??

I'll listen to any and all info on these things.

Another PA question SG

I have a fairly small PA - 12 channel, stereo, powered mixer w/300 watts per side and 2 - 2X12 TOA cabs - mainly used for basement rehearsing. I had thought that adding one powered subwoofer to this mix could result in a punchy, mid-sized PA.

Does that make sense? Any comments or suggestions?

Empty speaker cabs

My buddy has a set of them old style "reflex" PA cabs (I think that's what they're called). They have a 15" speaker and a horn/driver in each. He thinks it's all JBL stuff and they sound great, but they weigh a TON!

I've seen some of the newer speaker cabs that look to made from plastic (or some sort of composite material) and are relatively light weight. Does anyone...

Upright bass

Hey SG,
Have you done many soundguy jobs where upright bass was one of the instruments? Just curious as to what problems you had to deal with, if so. I know feedback is the main problem, and of course, the player hearing himself onstage.
When I put the band back together next year, I'm going to have a pure rockabilly set (or two), and I really want to run a doghouse bass for it.

Watched a Hartke bass amp burn it's DI section .
How ?
It was plugged into a Mackie PA / amp system.
with a standard Mic cable
through an inferior house electrical system.

If they had used a ground lift DI instead.
that amp would still be original.
I had to cut the DI section off the board
( chip & wiring )
and use a ground lift DI ( drummer had ! )
to finish the gig
I think at least 110 VAC was passing between the
amp and PA.
After that all...

Bass Buzz

Hello everyone. I'm having a problem with my bass that I hope someone can help me with.

It seems that whenever I play a show, I get this really annoying buzz coming through my amp. I am using an Ibanez Soundgear bass with active pickups through a Hartke 4x10 cabinet with a 200 watt head. I am running my bass through a Samson direct box that runs into the soundboard (I don't have a direct output on my amp). When I flip the ground switch, the buzz switches from my amp to the PA.
