Bear claw Over the top, spring type The over the top spring type in my Allen Old Flame rattle when I play a low G. I fiddled around with them and got it to stop, but when I swapped tubes it started again and I can't get it to go away now. Any tips to avoid this? I know it is the clamp spring and not the tube because if I keep the retainer off of the tube there is no rattling sound.

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I don't like the bear claw because they either come losse or are so tight you can't get the valve out. The over the top springs are better IMHO, and if the rattle is an issue I put a small section of medical rubber hose over the spring on each side. First one I ever had that did that. Damn. I was taking a pair of 6L6GC out to try to get something to match up in that damn Mesa Express when it happened. So many frequencies, so little time...

It was a POS fer shore. In my case, however, I usually don't change tubes more frequently than 30 or 40 year intervals...so the sockets/clamps, etc. never cause me any problems... E=Fb

I've never seen any, especially locally, but I admit I've not really set out to look. I've always just used a piece of heat-shrink tubing or a bead of silicone adhesive to quiet springs and similar hardware where things might get a bit warm. Cheers! I bent the tabs that screw into the chassis so they are as close to the base of the tube as possible. Then I twisted the clamp at the top (or bottom, depending on which way youe tube is facing) of the retainer so the spring kind of wraps around the tube. It seems to work, but I don't know if the retainer will vibrate and twist back around at gigging volumes. What temps are we talking about for a 6L6 that is at gigging volume?

I imagine it would hit somewhere around the 400F to 450F mark. Cheers! I HAVE to use over the tube spring types because we're such hoosiers when we handle our equipment. I've had tubes fall completely out and find them rolling around in the cabinet. My sockets are TIGHT and it still happened. Yeah, I'm too rough on my stuff but when it's 2am, I want to go freaking home. I'm not real gentle sometimes. I do however check my amp over for loose stuff once a month and obviously, I fix my own stuff as well as others. I'm just not a fan of claws. Just as an additional coment, I found the OT on my twin broke loose and had spun around and broke off on eof the 6L6's. And IT'S in a flight case. Bouncing up and down a ramp in and out of a truck is rough on stuff, even when you are trying to be gentle. You want me to play WHERE?

Thought that was appropriate. I guess I;m telling stories on myself. I'm just pretty tough on equipment(I think). ALTHOUGH, the newest amp that I use is 30 years old! Guess I'm not THAT bad! We work pretty much every week and I do double duty in two bands so yeah, the stuff gets moved a lot. Guess I'm really a northern hoosie- St. Louis area. You want me to play WHERE?
