What is the suggested brand of EL84 tubes for Blues Jr ? I have read that factory bias on these amps is on the hot side, Therefore, BillM's mods. I just
got one in for fix-up. Looks to have the original tubes...Fender branded GT's. Thanks for advice, Rod

In my experience, JJ makes the best current "field tested" EL84. They hold up well in the Dr. Z Maz 18 that runs them cathode biased.
Do your GTs say EL84S ? If so, the "S" is for Slovakia - and they are really JJ. Anyone have experience with the New Sensor "Mullard" EL84 "re-issues" ?
So many
frequencies, so little time...

Only use JJ EL84's, they have been good and reliable in my experience.

Yup. Unless you can get to a stash of NOS something or other, the JJ is the one to get. I like their E34L's also. It's ALL I put in Music Mans.
You want me to play WHERE?

The JJ's will take a pounding, and sound great. The JJ EL84 is one of the best current production "buzz pencils" out there.

I also concur....we only stock JJ EL-84s and have found them to be less likely to display the metallic sounding element noise so common in sovtek models....

SG123 wrote:No, this Blues jr is a '99 model. After closer look, every GT branded tube in it(all) are sub-branded Sovtek. Knowing two of the previous owners, I would suspect this puppy could use some fresh tubes! I will order and try the JJ's. Seems that Antique Elect. Supp. has a 10% off the whole catalog thru Dec. Yee-haw...order up...Rod |
